How to cope on the first day of ‘big school’

Getting through the first day of ‘big school’ is a fresh challenge for a small child, it’s going to be tough on you as a parent as well. You’ll do your level best to keep your emotions under lock and key but as soon your little cherub settles in school and you walk out of the door all you’ll feel like doing is bursting into tears. We’ve all been there and had to go the emotional roller coaster of the first day at infant school, it’s one of those challenges that life throws at you as a parent. Prepare as best you can – The school will expect a level of independence from your child, they should be toilet trained, be able to dress and undress for physical exercise and be able to pay attention, sat still as well. You can work on these areas way before the first day of term to prep your child in plenty of time. Talk about going to school – Chatting about going to school is a brilliant way to alleviate nerves, you can buy books on the subject and spend time going over them with your little ones. Make this a positive feeling for your youngster, broach some of the fun things they’ll be doing in the classroom, explain to them they’ll make new friends and have plenty of time for play as well. Get them excited about their new uniform – Encourage your child to have an active part in choosing their uniform along with school bags, water bottles, shoes or coats they’ll be taking to school. Get them to practice putting on their uniform, they’ll think it’s a game but it’ll help them when they get to school, plus it’ll make them excited about wearing the uniform on the first day. Take them out for a ‘treaty’ tea – You’ll be so relieved to see your child at the end of their first day and the chances are, they’ll already be settled and have made lots of new friends.
